1975 blockbuster Deewar with just four words: “Mere paas maa hai”. Being a mother is good, great and glorious in mythology, cinema and in the popular psyche in India. Sadly, in real life, motherhood is a hazardous experience in many parts of the country.

“No Tally of the Anguish: Accountability in maternal healthcare in India”, a recent report by Human Rights Watch (HRW), the New York-based international NGO, is the latest reminder of the paradox of being a mother in India. We deify motherhood but do not do enough to save mothers.

“For an emerging global economic power famous for its medical prowess, India continues to have unacceptably high maternal mortality levels. In 2005, the last year for which international data is available, India’s maternal mortality ratio (MMR) was 16 times that of Russia, 10 times that of China, and four times higher than in Brazil,” the 150-page report observes.

Some more damning figures: Of every 70 Indian girls who reach reproductive age, one will eventually die because of pregnancy, childbirth or unsafe abortion, compared to one in 7,300 in the developed world. More will suffer from preventable injuries, infections and disabilities, often serious and lasting a lifetime, due to failures in maternal care.
Indeed, India contributes a little under a fourth of the world’s maternal mortality.

Given all these disturbing numbers, why do not we hear more about maternal deaths? The short answer: because the magnitude of the problem is not recognised and the life stories of the dead women remain untold. Deaths due to conflicts, disasters or terrorism instantly grab public attention, become talking points, pressuring politicians and policymakers towards action. Most maternal deaths, in contrast, are deaths due to neglect, and remain ill-monitored.
Medical records typically capture the immediate, biological causes of maternal deaths. What gets left out are the personal, familial, socio-cultural and environmental factors contributing to these deaths. The key underlying reason behind a maternal death in India is not always lack of money. The brutal truth, as the HRW report notes, is that generally speaking, maternal mortality is high where women’s overall status is low, and public health systems are poor. It is the low status of women which leads to the low priority accorded to her health.

Early marriage, women’s neglect of their reproductive health, inability to decide when and where to seek medical help, widespread malnutrition, lack of education, awareness, domestic violence and poor access to quality healthcare, including emergency obstetric services are some of the all too familiar factors which contribute to tens of thousands of maternal deaths.

A telling indicator: In rural India, even the desperately poor spend months planning every detail of a family wedding.
The birth of a child, in stark contrast, is considered a routine affair, requiring minimal preparation and expenditure. Neglect during pregnancy and childbirth claims the lives of around 100,000 women across the country every year. Most such deaths can be averted but for the “three delays” — delay in decision to seek care, delay in reaching the appropriate health facility and delay in receiving care once inside a hospital.

Within India, there are also huge disparities. National averages camouflage sharp incountry variations in maternal mortality and morbidity. Northern India, made up of the so-called eight “Empowered Action Group” states, along with Assam, have the highest maternal mortality rates in the country. At 440 maternal deaths per 1,00,000 live births, Uttar Pradesh reports the second highest MMR (maternal mortality ratio) in the country. This is about 1.7 times the estimated national MMR and more than three times that of states like Tamil Nadu in south India.

Many of the insights in the HRW report are familiar to Indians working in public health. India’s flagship National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) seeks to address the twin challenges of maternal and child survival. Since its launch in 2005, the NRHM has pumped in huge sums of money to improve public health systems and reduce maternal and infant mortality. Recent data suggests that it has made some difference in parts of the country. All-India figures show a decline in maternal deaths between 2003 to 2006.

However, the initiatives will not produce the intended outcomes unless there is strict monitoring and healthcare system accountability, as the HRW report correctly stresses. We also need timely investigations into maternal deaths.

Unicef, for example, has piloted a verbal autopsy tool called Maternal and Perinatal Death Inquiry and Response, which involves communities. Two years ago, while visiting districts across the country where this was being implemented, I saw promising signs. Trained health and community workers and NGO field staff visited families where a maternal death has taken place with a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire is a tool to facilitate a process of raising awareness, of getting people concerned and involved about issues impacting a mother’s health and make them more knowledgeable about how they can do something about them. In several instances, communities had come forward with local solutions to critical issues like referral transport during obstetric emergencies. Saving mothers is not rocket science, and certainly within the capacity of a country whose lunar programme just celebrated its triumphant discovery of water at the moon. What is needed is a determined focus on the specific cracks through which so many women fall. In the Indian context, this means paying attention to not only the disparities between different states and regions but also the significant differences in utilisation of maternal health care within states, districts and cities.

Rural women, the urban poor, and women in geographically-remote areas report poorer utilisation of maternal healthcare services than the middle class in urban areas. Pregnant women belonging to dalit and tribal communities use maternal health services less than women belonging to upper castes. Maternal deaths continue in India because the women who die are not those we socialise with and their rights are not given the same value as our rights. India has the resources, tools and technical expertise to save its mothers and its children. It should do so not only because of what Human Rights Watch or any other organisation says, but because it is the right thing to do. It will be a critical step in making the idea of India more attractive.

తుంగభద్ర- కృష్ణ వరద బీభత్సంలో కకావికలైన ప్రజా జీవనానికి సహాయ సహకారాలు అందించడానికి, దెబ్బతిన్న వేలాది బాధిత కుటుంబాలను ఆదుకోవడానికి సమాజమంతా పెద్ద ఎత్తున కదులుతున్నట్టు, ప్రభుత్వ, ప్రభుత్వేతర సంస్థలన్నీ సహాయ, పునరావాస కార్యక్రమాలలో తలమునకలు గా ఉన్నట్టు ఒక అభిప్రాయం చలామణీలోకి వచ్చిం ది. పనిచేసే వారినెవరినీ విమర్శించనక్కరలేదేమో! సహాయ, పునరావాస చర్యలు పెద్ద ఎత్తునే జరుగుతున్నమాట, సామూహిక ఔదార్యం వ్యక్తమవుతున్న మాట నిజమేనేమో! కాని ప్రజల విషాదం, దైన్యం, దిగ్భ్రాంతి, సహాయం కోసం ఎదురుచూపు మాత్రం మొదటి రోజున ఎట్లా ఉండి ఉంటాయో అట్లాగే ఉన్నాయి.

జల ప్రళయం ఎగసిపడి నిండా రెండువారాలు గడిచిన తర్వాత కూడా ఆ దుస్థితి ఏమీ మారలేదని మహబూబ్‌నగర్‌ జిల్లా వడ్డేపల్లి మండలం రాజోళి గ్రామ శిథిలాలను, అదే జిల్లా అలంపురం పట్టణ వీధులను పైపైన చూసినా అర్థమవుతుంది. సుంకేశు ల ఆనకట్ట తెగిపోయి వరద తీసిందేమో గాని, రాజోళిలో కన్నీటి వరద ఇంకా ఆగలేదు. శ్రీశైలం నుంచి వరద నీరు కిందికి పంపినందువల్ల పైన అలంపురం లో తుంగభద్రలో నీళ్లు కనబడడం లేదేమోగాని రక్షణకు కట్టిన రాతి కట్టమీది నుంచి తుంగభద్ర దూకి ధ్వంసమైన ఇళ్లూ జీవితాలూ జీవనోపాధులూ ఇంకా ఆ బీభత్సాన్ని అనుభవిస్తూనే, ప్రకటిస్తూనే ఉన్నాయి.

మన అధికార వ్యవస్థలకు తోటి మనుషుల పట్ల కనీస గౌరవం లేదని చెప్పడానికి నిదర్శనంగా రెండు ఊళ్లలోనూ భరించరాని దుర్గంధం వ్యాపించి ఉంది. కనీసం ఆరేడు అంగుళాల నుంచి గరిష్ఠంగా రెండు మూడు అడుగుల మేర పేరుకుపోయిన ఒండ్రుమట్టి లో, బురదలో చిక్కుకున్న జీవజాతుల కళేబరాలు కుళ్లిన వాసన, ఆహార పదార్థాలు కుళ్లిన వాసన, మురి కి కాలువలు రోడ్ల బురద కలగలిసిపోయి ముక్కులు బద్దలు చేసే నీచు వాసన. చూడడానికి వెళ్లిన వాళ్లు కొన్ని గంటల కోసమో, నిమిషాల కోసమో అది భరించలేక ముక్కులకు గుడ్డలు అడ్డం పెట్టుకుని, వాంతు లు చేసుకుంటూ ఉంటే, నిస్సహాయులైన రాజోళి ప్రజలు, అంతకన్నా ఎక్కువగా అలంపురం ప్రజలు ఆ దుర్వాసనలో తిరుగుతున్నారు. వండుకుని తింటున్నారు.

నిత్యజీవిత కార్యక్రమాల్లో పాలుపంచుకుంటున్నారు. ఎంత దుర్మార్గమైన లోకం ఇది?! రెండు వారా లు గడిచినా కనీసం బురద శుభ్రం చేయడానికి శక్తి చాలని, మనసుపోని అధికార యంత్రాంగం ఏ బాధ్యతలు నిర్వహిస్తున్నట్టు? నాయకులకు రక్షణ కవచంగా నిలబడే వందలాది మంది ప్రజల ఆందోళనలను అణచడానికి సర్వశక్తి సాధనాలతో తరలివచ్చే వేలాదిమంది ‘ప్రజా సేవకుల’ వ్యవస్థ కొన్ని గ్రామాల్లో బుర ద ఎత్తించడం లాంటి చిన్న పని చేయడానికి వారాల తరబడి తీసుకుంటోంది.

ఉద్యమకారులను అణచడానికి వేలాది మందిని హుటాహుటిన క్షణాల మీద పంపించే ప్రభుత్వం ఒక్కొక్క గ్రామంలో నుంచి కొన్ని వందల టన్నుల బురదను తొలగించి, కడిగి, శుభ్రం చేసి, రోగాలకు నిలయం కాకుండా చేయడానికి కనీస చర్యలు కూడా చేపట్టలేదు. ఎవరి ఇంట్లో బురద వాళ్లే ఎత్తేసుకుంటారులే, ప్రకృతే శుభ్రం చేస్తుందిలే అన్న ట్టు ఉపేక్షిస్తోంది.

ఎర్త్‌ మూవర్లు, బుల్డోజర్లు వచ్చా యి గాని కేవలం ప్రభుత్వ వాహనాలు, సందర్శకుల వాహనాలు తిరగడానికి వీలైనంత మట్టుకు రోడ్లమీద బురదను పక్కకు నెట్టాయి. ఇప్పుడు రోడ్డుకు రెండు పక్కలా దుర్గంధపు కుప్పలు. ఆ దుర్వాసన మహా ఘనత వహించిన సందర్శకులను చికాకు పెట్టకుండా ఆ కుప్పల మీద డిడిటి, క్లోరిన్‌ చల్లితే చాలునని మాత్రం అధికారగణం అనుకున్నట్టుంది. రెండు గాఢమైన వాసనలు కలిసి దుర్భరమైన వాతావరణం.

దుర్వాసన ఒక పక్కనైతే, మనిషి పట్ల గౌరవం లేని మనుషులందరినీ బిచ్చగాళ్లుగా చూసే ప్రభుత్వాధికారుల, రాజకీయ నాయకుల, సందర్శకుల వైఖరి. రెండు వారాలుగా నిస్సహాయతలో మగ్గిపోయి, వాహనం కనబడితే చాలు ఏదో ఇవ్వడానికి ఎవరో వచ్చారని, ఈ వేటలో వెనుకబడితే ఆ అందేదేదో అందదని దయనీయమైన ఆదుర్దా మరొక పక్కన.

నిన్నటి వరకూ తన శ్రమ మీద తాను ఆధారపడుతూ, ఆత్మగౌరవంతో బతికిన మనిషి ఇవాళ ఇంత దుర్భరమైన స్థితిలోకి జారిపోతే, కనీస గౌరవం కూడా లేకుండా తోటి మనుషులూ, అధికార వ్యవస్థలూ ఎలా పనిచేస్తున్నాయో చూస్తే ఆపుకోలేని దుఃఖం కలిగింది. మనిషి ఇంత దీనంగా ఉండవలసిన పరిస్థితి ఎందువల్ల తలెత్తింది? ఇంకా ఘోరం దారి పొడవునా గుట్టలుగుట్టలుగా పారవేసిన పాతబట్టలు. గ్రహీతలకు అవసరమైనవి, గౌరవప్రదమైనవి ఇస్తున్నామో లేదో చూడకుండా సహాయం పేరుమీద ప్రకటితమైన ఔదార్యం నిజం గా బాధితులకు పనికిరాలేదు. లేదా బాధితులకు అవసరమైనవి అందలేదు. ఫలితం పాతబట్టలు, చాలీచాలని బట్టలు అందిన వాళ్లందరూ అక్కడికక్కడే పారేసిపోయారు.

రాజోళి జనాభా 2001 జనగణన ప్రకారం 11, 617. బహుశా ప్రస్తుతం పదిహేనువేలు కావచ్చు. సరిగ్గా సుంకేశుల ఆనకట్ట కింద ఉండే ఈ గ్రామం ఆ ఆనకట్ట తెగి మీద పడడంతో హతాశురాలైంది. ఆ ఆనకట్ట రాత్రిపూట తెగి ఉంటే, సరిగ్గా ముప్ఫై ఏళ్ల కింద గుజరాత్‌లో ఆనకట్ట తెగి మోర్వీ పట్టణంలో వేలాది మంది మనుషులు జల సమాధి అయిపోయినట్టు అయి ఉండేది. ‘అలా జరిగినా బాగుండును, మాకూ ఈ బాధ తప్పేది, మీకూ ఈ బాధ తప్పేది’ అని ఒక చేనేత కార్మికుడు కన్నీళ్లింకిపోయిన గొంతుతో, సమాజం తలదించుకోవలసిన మాట అన్నాడంటే ఆ ఊరు ఎంత దుఃఖాన్ని చవిచూసి ఉంటుంది.

ఆ ఊరిలో ఇళ్లన్నీ నేలమట్టమైపోయా యి. గోడలు గట్టిగా నిలిచి ఉన్న చోట కూడా ఇళ్లలో రెండడుగుల మేర బురద నిండి నివాసయోగ్యం కాకుండాపోయాయి. అక్కడి నుంచి రెండు కిలోమీటర్ల దూరంలో కాస్త మెరకగా ఉన్నచోట పునరావాసం కల్పించవచ్చు గాని జీవనోపాధి కల్పించడం అత్యవసరమైన పెద్ద పని.

ఆ గ్రామంలో కనీసం మూడువేల మగ్గాలు పని చేస్తున్నాయని ఒక అంచనా. ఆ మూడువేల మగ్గాలు ఇవాళ విరిగిపోయి ఉన్నాయి. వేలాది కుటుంబాల జీవనాధారం ధ్వంసమైపోయింది. ఒక్క పద్మశాలి కుటుంబాలు మాత్రమే కాదు, రాజోళిలో ముస్లింలు, కురబ, చాకలి, కమ్మరి వంటి ఇతర కులాల వాళ్లు కూడా నేతపనిలో ఉన్నారు. గద్వాల వంటి ప్రఖ్యాత నేత వస్త్రాల మార్కెట్లకు తమ ఉత్పత్తులు అందిస్తున్నారు. ఒక మగ్గం పునర్నిర్మించాలంటే కనీసం అరవై వేల నుంచి లక్ష రూపాయలు అవసరమవుతుంది.

సహాయ పునరావాస కార్యక్రమాలలో ఈ జీవనోపా ధి నష్టం లెక్కకే రావడం లేదు. చేనేత సహకార సంఘం కార్యాలయంలో ఉన్న కోటి రూపాయలకు పైగా విలువ చేసే వస్త్రాలు, నూలు నాశనమైపోయా యి. ఆ కార్యాలయంలో నుంచి బురద ఎత్తివేయడానికి అధికార యంత్రాంగం ఏమీ చేయలేదు. ఎంత కూలి ఇచ్చినా ఆ దుర్గంధపూరితమైన బురద ఎత్తిపోయడానికి ఎవరూ దొరకక, చేనేత కార్మికులు, ఆ కార్యాలయ ఉద్యోగులు పారిశుధ్య కార్మికుల్లా పని చేస్తున్నారు.
ఇక అలంపురంలో ఎక్కడ చూస్తే అక్కడ సహాయ శిబిరాలు, బృందాలు, అధికార గణం కనబడుతున్నా రు గాని, అంతకన్న మించిన దుర్వాసన. పరిశుభ్రమై న, గౌరవప్రదమైన వాతావరణం ముందు కల్పించాలనే కనీస స్పృహ కొరవడిన స్థితి.

అసలు ఆ ఊరే శ్రీశైలం జలాశయంలో ముంపుకు గురవుతుందని అనుకున్నప్పుడు, ప్రాచీన ఆలయాలను, ఊరిని రక్షించడానికి పెద్ద రాతిగోడ కట్టారు. తుంగభద్రలో అనూహ్యమైన వరద వచ్చినందువల్ల, సుంకేశుల ఆనకట్ట నిర్మాణంలో గతంలో జరిగిన అవకతవకల వల్ల, ప్రస్తుతం ఆ ఆనకట్ట తెగిపోయినందువల్ల ఆ రాతిగోడమీది నుంచి వరద ఊళ్లోకి ప్రవేశించింది. అసలు సుంకేశుల ఆనకట్ట నిర్మాణం దగ్గరి నుంచీ ఊళ్లోకి ప్రవేశించిన బురదను ఎత్తిపోయడం దాకా ప్రభుత్వ, అధికార యంత్రాంగం లోపాలు, నిర్లక్ష్యాలు, అక్రమా లు ఎన్నో ఉన్నాయి. ఎప్పటి బురద ఇది? ఎంత కడిగితే తరుగుతుంది ఇది?

Recent floods in the state have not only resulted in destruction of life and property, they have also hit the Gadwal sari industry hard. – Saswati Mukherjee

Hyderabad, Oct. 19: The severe flooding in the state which has destroyed homes, crops, livelihoods and businesses has claimed an unusual victim: the famous Gadwal sari.

The usual annual turnover of the Gadwal sari industry is Rs 2 crore, but this year there may be a drop of at least 40 per cent in production.

The floods have washed away four of the 18 villages in Gadwal from where most of the weavers hail.

Also, with people spending less and toning down the celebrations this year, the saris are likely to find fewer takers.

The Gadwal sari industry does brisk business throughout the year. But it really picks up during the festive season.

This time, though, dealers who get a supply of close to 25 lakh sari units from different weavers are expecting a 40 per cent dip in production and are expecting no more than 10 per cent profit.

“Usually, sales go up during the festive season and see a decline off season, but the average sales remain constant,” says Mr T. Vijayulu, president of the Handloom Weavers’ Cooperative Society, Gadwal.

There are about 25 sari dealers in the area named Krishna Reddy Bungalow in Gadwal.

Some 60 per cent of those engaged in weaving the famous sari are women.

The weavers supply the saris to dealers or sahukars who deal directly with the customers and make the most profit.

“The labour charges have remained constant for the last so many years now. They must be revised at the earliest or else eating two square meals a day will soon be a challenge for us,” says Mr G. Srinivasulu, a weaver.

Dealers say the rates have been fixed after taking all factors into consideration. The weaver earns Rs 500-600 for every cotton sari, Rs 1,200 for a cotton-silk mix and Rs 1,500-1,800 for a silk sari.

The raw material is provided to the weavers by the dealers, but the weaver does everything else from dying it in the given colour to hand weaving the sari according to a computer generated design.

All this is covered under the above mentioned labour charge.

Some innovation is accepted. “We get to choose the colours of the sari if no particular preference is given to us. Based on different permutations and combinations, we come up with our own range of saris,” says Mr S. Sathyanarayan, a weaver who has 10 mouths to feed at home from his meagre income.

A weaver family has a maximum of six looms at home, and most of the work is done by family members. Each loom is manned by two people and usually husband and wife work together on a loom.

The average output is five saris in two months.

“Today this profession is looked down upon. Added to that is the fact that the income generated is not too great,” says Mr A. Daulappa, a weaver in his late 40s who has two sons and a daughter. One son has finished school and assists his father in weaving saris, but he has definite plans to quit once he finds a good job.

“I will continue to stay here with my parents but cannot take up weaving as a profession,” says young Krishnaiah, Mr Daulappa’s son. Today, there are easier work opportunities: driving an autorickshaw, being a waiter at a hotel, tailoring, being a watchman or going into real estate. These have caught the fancy of the youth, who prefer them to the huge physical strain involved in hand-weaving.

Also the great traditional skill is not given the respect it deserves. Local people say that no family wants to give their daugh ter in marriage to a weaver.

“Even a farmer enjoys more respect than we do in society,” says Mr Sathya narayan, a weaver.

RAJOLI (Mahabubnagar district): The unprecedented flood has taken the sheen out of this village located on the banks of Tungabhadra river.

A rich village with about 40,000 population, Rajoli is acclaimed for its handloom products which are in good demand. The flood that ravaged the village on October 1 has, however, shattered the lives of the weavers who lost their looms as well as houses.

Only 10 per cent of the 4,000 odd dwellings withstood the destruction unleashed by Tungabhadra, which was on spate. With the houses and looms that brought them repute within the country and abroad shattered by the river’s fury, the village now appears a dumpyard of dead bodies of cattle, pigs and dogs with slush left by the receding water still continuing to obstruct free walk of the streets.

Thukaram, one of the three MPTC members from the village and a proud owner of 70 looms, lost all his equipment as well as stock worth Rs. 70 lakh. And, the story of dozens of others is no different. “With all the property and belongings lost, there is no scope for us to survive,” said Rumala Rukmini, a handloom weaver who lost her eight looms and house.

Even as the reality is yet to dawn on many, residents are leaving to take shelter in their relatives’ houses in other towns and villages.

“We have lost our house as well as property. How can we live here in such circumstances?” lamented Netha Venkatesh (40).

Vaddepally ZPTC member Srinivasulu wanted the authorities concerned to keep the disaster in view and ensure that the entire village was relocated to a higher altitude where the residents were not affected in the event of such calamities.

ప్రసవం అంటే ఒక కొత్త వ్యక్తిని కుటుంబంలోకి ఆహ్వానించడం. కానీ ఆహ్వానించే వ్యక్తే ప్రపంచం నుంచి కనుమరుగయితే కలలన్నీ చెల్లాచెదరై ఇంట్లో విషాదం తాండవిస్తుంది. దీనికి కారణాలు అనేకం.

ప్రసవం గురించిన ప్రా«థమిక అవగాహన లేకపోవడం వాటిలో మొదటిది. ప్రసవం అంటే అదేదో అతి సాధారణ విషయమనుకునే వారే ఎక్కువ. అందుకే కుటుంబ సభ్యులెవరూ ఆ విషయంలో తీసుకోవలసిన అదనపు బాధ్యతల గురించి ఆలోచించరు.

అయితే నగరవాసులు ఈ విషయంలో కొంత మెరుగైన దశలోనే ఉన్నారు. ప్రసవానికి ముందు డాక్టర్‌ను సంప్రదించడంతో పాటు, వారి సూచనలను కూడా పాటిస్తున్నారు. కాని కొన్ని సంప్రదాయాల కారణంగా తీరా ప్రసవానికి ముందు కొన్ని తప్పిదాలు చేస్తుంటారు. పురుడు తమ ఇంట్లోనే జరగాలంటూ పుట్టింటికి తీసుకు వెళ్లిపోతుంటారు. వైద్య వసతులు ఉన్నచోటైతే ఫర వాలే దు. కానీ, అవేవీ లేవని తెలిసి కూడా కొందరు ఎక్కడో కుగ్రామానికి తీసుకువెళుతుంటారు.

ప్రసవానికి కనీస వసతులు కూడా లేని చోట ఒక్కోసారి అది ప్రాణాపాయానికి దారితీయవచ్చు. ప్రసవ సమయంలో వైద్య నిపుణులలో అంటే వైద్యసేవిక (ఎఎన్‌ఎమ్‌), న ర్స్‌, డాక్టర్‌ లేదా గైనకాలజిస్టు వీరిలో కనీసం ఒకరైనా ఉండాలి. నగరాల్లో ఇటీవల ఈ సదుపాయాలు 60 శాతానికి పెరిగాయి. అంటే మిగతా 40 శాతం లేనట్లే కదా! అదే గ్రామీణ ప్రాంతాల్లో అయితే ఈ సదుపాయం 80 శాతం ప్రజలకు లేదు. ఆ 20 శాతమైనా అతి కష్టం మీద దూరప్రాంతాలకు వెళ్లి, ఆ సదుపాయాన్ని పొందగలుగుతున్నారు.

రక్తహీనత
ప్రసవ మరణాలకు గల కారణాల్లో సాంప్రదాయం, అవగాహన లేకపోవడం, రక్తహీనత ప్రధానమైనవి. వీటిలో రక్తహీనత అది సులువైన చికిత్స. కానీ, మన దేశంలో జరుగుతున్న ప్రసవ మరణాలతో 20 శాతం ర క్తహీనత కారణంగా జరుగుతున్నవే. నిజానికి ఇది కేవలం మాత్రలతో పోయే సమస్య. అయినా ఈ నిర్లక్ష్యం కొనసాగుతూనే ఉంది.

- ఆహార విషయాల్లో కూడా మన వారిలో అపోహలు ఎక్కువే. గుడ్డు తింటే బిడ్డకు జత్తు రాదని, ఆకుకూరలు తింటే పిల్లలు నల్లగా పుడతారని ఇలా ఏవేవో అపోహలు ఉన్నాయి. అలాగే కుంకుమ పువ్వు తింటే పిల్లలు తెల్లగా పుడతార న్న అపోహలు ఉన్నాయి. ఇలా అవసరమైనవి తినకుండా అవసరం లేనివి తింటూ ఉంటారు. ఆకు కూరలు తినకపోవడం వల్ల రక్తహీనత పెరుగుతుంది.

- ప్రసవ మరణాలకు గల ప్రధాన కారణాల్లో రక్త స్రావం ఒకటి. ఇది ప్రసవ సమయంలో కావచ్చు. లేదా ప్రసవం అవగానే కావచ్చు.
-రక్తపోటు అధికమై కొందరికి గుఱ్ఱపు వాతం (ఎక్లమ్సియా) రావచ్చు. తరచూ పరీక్షలు చేయించకపోతే ఈ సమస్యను ముందే గుర్తించడం సాధ్యం కాదు. కొన్ని సార్లు ఈ సమస్య రక్తపోటు పెరగకుండానే రావచ్చు.
-పరిసరాలు పరిశుభ్రంగా లేనిచోట ప్రసవం అయితే ఇన్‌ఫెక్షన్ల బారిన పడే ప్రమాదం ఉంది. ఇంటిని పేడ తో అలకడం, పాప బొడ్డు మీద పేడను పెట్టడం వంటి సంప్రదాయాల వల్ల తల్లీబిడ్డలిద్దరికీ ఇన్‌ఫెక్షన్లు వచ్చే అవకాశం ఉంది.

నిర్ణయలోపం
సరియైన వేళ సరియైన నిర్ణయం తీసుకోకపోవడం ప్రసవ మరణాలకు మరో ప్రధాన కారణం.
ప్రసవానికి పుట్టింటికి తీసుకు వెళుతున్నప్పుడు ముఖ్యంగా మూడు విషయాల గురించి ఆలోచించాలి.
- ప్రసవంలో ఏదైనా ఇబ్బంది తలెత్తితే వెంటనే తరలించడానికి రవాణా సౌకర్యం ఉందా ?

- అవసరమైనప్పుడు రక్తం దొరికే వీలుందా ? సర్జన్‌, మత్తు ఇచ్చే డాక్టర్‌ శిశువైద్యులు ఉన్నారా? ఇవన్నీ ముందే తెలుసుకోవాలి. ఉంటే వారు వెంటనే చికిత్స అందించే అవకాశాలు ఉంటాయోలేదో కూడా తెలుసుకోవాలి.

-అవసరమైన డబ్బు కూడా ముందే సమకూర్చి పెట్టుకోవడం చాలా అవసరం.
- ప్రసవంలో అతిగా రక్త స్రావమైనా, లేదా మెదడులో రక్తస్రావం (హెమరేజ్‌) అయినా అరగంటలోనే ప్రాణాపాయం ఏర్పడవచ్చు.అందుకే రక్తం అందుబాటులో ఉండేలా చూసుకోవాలి.

- గ్రామీణ ప్రాంతాల్లో ఉండే వారు ప్రసవానికి ముందే హాస్పిటల్‌కు బాగా దగ్గరగా ఉండే లా జాగ్రత్తపడాలి. మరీ దూరంగా ఉంటే వెంటనే వెళ్లడం సాధ్యం కాకపోవచ్చు.. వెళ్లినా చాలా ఆలస్యమైపోతుంది.

- ప్రసవానికి ముందు కనీసం మూడు సార్లయినా డాక్టర్‌ను సంప్రదించాలి. మొదటి సారి నాలుగోనెలలో, ఏడవనెలకు ముందు ఒకసారి, ఏడోనెల దాటాక రెండు సార్లు చూపించాలి. లేదంటే కనీసం ఒకసారైనా చూపాలి. ఇలా అయితే రక్తపోటు స్థితిగతులను ఇంకేమైనా సమస్యలు ఉన్నా ముందే తెలుసుకోవచ్చు.
రక్త సరఫరా
కొంత మందికి ప్రతి కాన్పుకూ సర్జరీ అవసరమవుతుంది. రక్త హీనత ఉంటే మరీ ఎక్కువగా సమస్య ఉంటుంది. ఇలాంటి వారికి రక్తం అందుబాటులో ఉండడం చాలా అవసరం.
-రక్తహీనత వల్ల మెదడుకు, గుండెకు కావలసినంత ఆక్సిజన్‌ అందదు. ఇది మరింత ప్రమాదం.
-రక్తహీనత ఉన్నా కొందరికి ప్రసవం మామూలుగా జరగవచ్చు కానీ, తలీ ్లబిడ్డలిరువురూ అనారోగ్యంగానే ఉంటారు. ఈ లోగా మరోసారి గర్భం వస్తే ఆ పరిస్థితి మరింత దయనీయంగా తయారవుతుంది.
- గుఱ్ఱపు వాతం సాధారణంగా ఏడోనెల తరువాత వస్తుంది. కొంత మందికి ఎప్పుడైనా రావచ్చు. దీనివల్ల తల్లికీ బిడ్డకూ ప్రమాదమే.

బాల్యవివాహాలు
- ప్రసవ మరణాలకు బాల్య వివాహాలు కూడా కారణమే. ఇవి మన రాష్ట్రంలోనే ఎక్కువ. గర్భం ధరించడానికి 21 నుంచి 29 ఏళ్ళ లోపు కాలమే సరియైనది. దీనికి ముందైనా తరువాతైనా సమస్యలు ఎక్కువగా ఉంటాయి.

శారీరక పరిణతి రాకముందే గర్భం రావడం వల్ల రక్తహీనత సమస్య ఎక్కువ ఉంటుంది. కొన్ని సంస్థలు రక్తహీనతను నివారించే చర్యలు చేపడుతున్నా అవి సరిపోవు. ప్రసవం అయిన తరువాత చేసే బారసాలకు కొందరు అమితంగా ఖర్చుపెడతారు.

కానీ, అందులో సగం కూడా గర్భిణిగా ఉన్నప్పుడు ఆరోగ్యం మీద పెట్టరు. తొలినుంచే శ్రద్ద వహించి, అవసరమైన అన్ని జాగ్రత్తలు తీసుకుంటే ప్రసవ మరణాలను గణనీయంగా తగ్గించే అవకాశం ఉంది.

HYDERABAD: A group of young girls from Sri Sarada Degree College for Women, Ameerpet have conducted a social audit on the process of issuing post-matric scholarships and reimbursement of tuition fee, of B.C. Welfare Department for 141 students of Maharishi Veda Vignana Mahavidyalaya Junior College, Begumpet.

The methodical verification of scholarships, records of students and the college and even the BC Welfare Department, threw up the usual issues, which infest scholarship distribution programme. The 22 girls, who themselves are availing the scholarships, were trained to take up social audit by the Centre for Good Governance at the Dr. MCR HRD Institute.

Common grievances
Inordinate delays in sanctioning of scholarships, acquiring salary or caste certificate from Mandal Revenue Officer, late submission of applications for scholarships by students and sometimes late submission of attendance report by the college, essential to reimburse tuition fee were the broad findings from the social audit. “Earlier, scholarships and reimbursement of tuition fee were affected by embezzlements. To curtail it and to bring in transparency, we have introduced this concept of making the stakeholders take up social audit. Such studies would be taken up at other Government colleges in the near future,” informed Director of BC Welfare Department K. Sunitha.

Meticulous work
The girls made sure that the findings of the audit were presented meticulously. They made sure that students, college and department officials explained the reasons for inordinate delays.

“This is the fun in social audits. We get to grill authorities and even students for delays. Centre for Good Governance taught us and gave us skills to take up such a study scientifically,” says T. Ramya, B.Sc second year student from the college.

Another student pointed out that such exercises helped them improve language skills and instilled confidence among them.

“We gained a lot of confidence with this exercise. We were made to present the findings at such a big gathering for the first time. We were tense but it was a learning experience,” said Rahemunnissa Begum, a B.Com first year of the college.

Bhuj, June 5 Navagam, a nondescript village in Anjar taluka of eastern Kutch is remotely connected with Mallipalli, a poor village in Karimnagar district of Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh. But this Kutch village boasts of all least four brides, all minor teenagers and allegedly sold off by their relatives in Mallipalli to farmers here.

On a tip off from the local media, the Anjar police raided the village on Wednesday and found Sapana, a 14-year-old Class IX student married off to one Karamsi Rakhiya Rabari, a middle-aged villager. The police also discovered that Jyoti, 17, from the same Andhra village has been married off to one Govind Pala of this Anjar village. The girl even has a nine-month old baby girl from the marriage.

Harish Bhatia, a local journalist who accompanied the police party said Sapana told them of three more teenaged girls from her state who have been sold off to villagers here. But only Jyoti, her cousin, could be traced. Bhatia said two other girls were in nearby Junagam, but when the police went to the village, the girls’ middle-aged husbands could not be traced.

Police officials said Sapana’s age was wrongly mentioned as 20 in an affidavit filed before a local notary, and that of her husband as 26. The villagers did not reveal that the husbands of these two teenaged girls were middle-aged. The police have now recovered the affidavit but say language barrier is creating roadblocks in the investigation process. The girls are able to converse only in broken Hindi, they said.

Sources in the police team told this paper that Sapana did not like her parents or her Kutchi husband and wanted to go back to her mother’s sister. “She told us that her maternal uncle sold her off to the elder brother of her husband for Rs 40,000 and that the latter had come all the way to their village at Mallipalli to buy her,” they said.

Dr Shyam Sundar, who originally belongs to Andhra Pradesh and runs the NGO, ‘Group 2001′ for the rehabilitation of the quake-hit people, said he was not surprised at the developments. “The girls belong to the poverty stricken Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh. The poor people can do anything for their survival. I will make my own inquiries to bring out the truth,” he said.

Anjar police station inspector M A Chavada, who had rescued the girls, was not available for comments as he was out of station. Deputy Superintendent of Police P L Chodhary also pleaded ignorance of the matter. “I had gone to the nearby Bhachau taluka for investigating theft cases and am not aware of the matter. I will immediately get the details of the case and do the needful,” he said.

Station officer of the Anjar police station told this paper that the girls have now been shifted to the Nari Niketan (a shelter for women in distress) at Bhuj till their parents take them back. The officer said there has been no formal complaint registered in the case.

Elsewhere, the Kutch Mahila Kalyan Kendra, where Sapana has been lodged, is not happy with the police. “A constable had come to Kendra last night to hand over Sapana. The letter from the police did not have any official number and they merely asked us to keep her till her parents take her back to their native place,” said Illaben, in-charge of the Kendra.

Kumudini Pancholi, president of the Kendra and former MLA also expressed her displeasure over the manner in which the police handled the case.

“’I told the new district police chief last night that the way Sapana was handed over to the Kendra when they were short of staff, was not good. Also, this shelter house is for women above 18 years of age, but here the girl is a minor teenager and has to be sent to a juvenile court. There were also no court orders taken by the police. I will meet the Kutch police chief and formally lodge a complaint and ask him to take corrective measures immediately,” she said.

Officials Fail To Act Despite Reports Carried In ‘TOI’

Of Illegal Hysterectomies On Lambada Women in Medak District

Hyderabad: An extreme case of criminal activity like this should have made the government machinery jump up in immediate action.

But two weeks after ‘TOI’ first reported cases of large scale hysterectomies in Medak district, the government machinery has barely woken up to the issue of young Lambada tribal women losing their uteruses, health and savings to ‘doctors’ who con them into undertaking these procedures even for routine complaints.

Both health and women and child welfare departments claim to have “taken note” of the reports that appeared in this newspaper and say they have asked for a detailed inquiry into hysterectomy cases in Medak district. Both the departments have “asked” the Medak district collector to inquire into the matter. Nothing beyond that has happened.

P V Ramesh, secretary, health and medical department said that it was a serious public health issue and that he would notify both the health minister and the chief minister about it. “Criminal action will be taken against any unlicenced practitioner found to be operating in person or in proxy,” he thundered in the usual manner of a bureaucrat that signifies little action. He said the Medak district collector would submit the report in a week’s time. In similar fashion Y V Anuradha, director, women and child welfare, declared that district officials from her department and local health officials would be working on this matter. An unconcerned state health minister, S Chandrasekhar Rao remained unavailable for comment despite repeated attempts and so did industry minister and gynaecologist J Geeta Reddy, who represents a constituency bordering the place where these illegal cases had surfaced.
Senior officials pleaded that there was no mechanism to monitor the situation and was one reason the practice has gone unabated over the years.

In what signifies low priority being attached to the whole matter, the district administration has just begun training a team that would go around the rural parts of the district asking women not to visit registered medical practitioners (RMPs). The local RMPs, who people here consider as doctors, have allegedly performed uterus removal procedures on hundreds of women over the last few years even for routine complaints.

This team, comprising anganwadi workers, home guards and health officials, will be functional from July 15 and would go around villages of five mandals spreading the word to say no to local doctors and approach the team’s members, who belong to the local community, to take them to a doctor as against them visiting one on their own. Analysts however wondered how effective these teams would be.

“We will train a few young boys and girls in the area who can speak the native language and will be trained on this issue of hysterectomy and even female foeticide,” said Medak district collector B Venkatesham, adding that the team would visit each house to check if any woman had undergone a hysterectomy or was considering the same.

The district collector met health and women and child welfare department officials earlier this week at a meeting called by Dr K Rajyalakshmi, nominated member of the legislative council, Medak.

“We also spoke to the mobile hospital of Narsapur improving the lab services there so that proper tests could be carried out,” said Dr Rajyalakshmi, adding that women in the area still complained of abdominal pain and proper tests were needed to determine the cause.

గతంలో గ్రామాల్లో ఆరోగ్య కార్యకర్తలు ఇంటింటికీ తిరుగుతూ ”మీ ఇంట్లో అందరూ బాగున్నారా? ఎవరికైనా ఆరోగ్య సమస్యలు ఉన్నాయా?” అని అడిగేవారు. ఇప్పుడు ప్రభుత్వ వైద్య సేవలు పడకేశాయి. ఆ స్థానాన్ని ప్రైవేటు ఆసుపత్రులు ఆక్రమించాయి. మెదక్‌ జిల్లాలో ఇప్పుడు ప్రైవేటు వైద్యులు మహిళలు పనిచేసే చోటికి వెళ్లి ”నీకు గానీ, మీ ఇంట్లో ఎవరికైనా గానీ కడుపునొప్పి ఉందా?” అంటూ పలకరిస్తున్నారు. కడుపు నొప్పి ఉందంటే చాలు… అది కేన్సర్‌కు దారితీయవచ్చని భయపెట్టి ఆపరేషన్‌ చేసేస్తున్నారు. గర్భసంచిని తొలగించేస్తున్నారు. ఇందుకోసం అయిదు నుంచి పదివేల రూపాయలు వసూలు చేస్తున్నారు. ప్రత్యేకించి కొందరు ఆర్‌ఎంపీ, పీఎంపీ డాక్టర్లు తమ ఆసుపత్రుల్లో ఇలాంటి ఆపరేషన్లు నిర్వహిస్తున్నారు. హైదరాబాద్‌ నుంచి కొంతమంది సర్జన్లు మెదక్‌ జిల్లాకు వెళ్లి మరీ డబ్బు కోసం ఈ శస్త్రచికిత్సలు చేసి వస్తున్నారు. అసలు స్త్రీవ్యాధి నిపుణుల (గైనకాలజిస్టు) సలహా లేకుండానే, కేవలం డబ్బే పరమావధిగా ఉత్తపుణ్యాన ఈ ఆపరేషన్లు జరిగిపోతున్నాయి. దీనితో నిరుపేద మహిళల ఆరోగ్యం క్షీణిస్తోంది. తరచు నీరసంగా ఉండడం, ఎక్కువసేపు నిల్చోలేకపోవడం, చిన్న చిన్న పనులు కూడా చేసుకోలేకపోవడం వంటి సమస్యల్ని ఎదుర్కొంటూ వారు ఉపాధికి దూరమవుతున్నారు. సెంటర్‌ ఫర్‌ యాక్షన్‌ రీసెర్చ్‌ అండ్‌ పీపుల్స్‌ డెవలప్‌మెంట్‌ (CARPED) ‌ సంస్థ ఇటీవల ఒక అధ్యయనం నిర్వహించగా… మెదక్‌ జిల్లాలోని పలు గ్రామాల్లో 728 మంది మహిళలకు ఇలా హిస్టరెక్టమీ (గర్భసంచి తొలగింపు) ఆపరేషన్లు జరిగినట్లు తేలింది. వీరిలో అత్యధికులు బీసీ, గిరిజన మహిళలే. రాష్ట్రంలో ప్రైవేటు ఆసుపత్రులపై ఎలాంటి నియంత్రణా లేకపోవడం, గతంలో తెచ్చిన చట్టాన్ని ప్రభుత్వం అమలు చేయకపోవడంతో ప్రైవేటు ఆసుపత్రులు అమాయక మహిళల జీవితాలతో ఆటలాడుకుంటున్నాయి.

అధ్యయన వివరాలివీ…
* మెదక్‌ జిల్లాలోని నర్సాపూర్‌, మెదక్‌, వెల్దుర్తి, జోగిపేట, సంగారెడ్డి, కౌడిపల్లి, ఇతర ప్రాంతాల్లో ఉన్న ప్రైవేట్‌ ఆస్పత్రుల్లో ఈ ఆపరేషన్లు జరిగాయి. 28 గ్రామాలకు చెందిన మహిళలు వీటిలో శస్త్ర చికిత్సలు చేయించుకున్నారు.
* ఒక్కో గ్రామంలో 10 నుంచి 55 మంది మహిళలకు గర్భసంచిని తొలగించారు.
* చాలామందికి చిన్న వయసులోనే ఈ ఆపరేషన్లు చేసేశారు. బాధితుల్లో 21-25 సంవత్సరాల మధ్య వయస్సు వారు 85 మంది, 26-30 మధ్య వయస్సు వారు 165 మంది ఉన్నారు.
* అసలు పిల్లలే లేని 21 మంది మహిళలకు కూడా గర్భసంచిని తీసేశారు.
* మొత్తం ఆపరేషన్లలో నాలుగో వంతుకు పైగా నర్సాపూర్‌లోని నర్సింగరావు ప్రైవేటు ఆసుపత్రిలోనే జరిగాయి. ఇక్కడ ఏకంగా 192 మందికి హిస్టరెక్టమీ చేశారు.

అనవసరం: వైద్యులు
రుతుక్రమం సరిగా లేకపోవడం, తెల్లబట్ట, అధిక రక్తస్రావం, పొత్తికడుపులో నొప్పి వంటి సమస్యలతో మహిళలు బాధపడుతుండడం సహజమే. చాలామందికి మామూలు యాంటీబయాటిక్స్‌, ఇతర మందులతోనే ఈ సమస్యల్ని తగ్గించవచ్చని వైద్యులు చెబుతున్నారు. గర్భసంచీ తొలగించడం తప్ప మరే మార్గమూ లేదని భావించినప్పుడు… అత్యవసర పరిస్థితుల్లో మాత్రమే హిస్టరెక్టమీ చేయాలని వారు పేర్కొన్నారు. అయితే ప్రైవేటు ఆసుపత్రుల వారు ఎక్స్‌రే, అల్ట్రాసౌండ్‌, సీటీ స్కాన్‌, ఎంఆర్‌ఐ వంటి పరీక్షలేవీ చేయకుండానే, కనీసం గైనకాలజిస్టు సలహా కూడా లేకుండానే బాధితులకు ఆపరేషన్లు నిర్వహించేస్తున్నారు. ఇన్‌ఫెక్షన్స్‌, రక్తస్రావం, తెల్లబట్ట, పొత్తికడుపులో నొప్పి వచ్చినప్పుడు గైనకాలజిస్టును సంప్రదించాలని, నిపుణుల సలహా లేకుండా శస్త్రచికిత్సలు చేయించుకోరాదని నర్సాపూర్‌ ప్రభుత్వ ఆసుపత్రి గైనకాలజిస్టు డాక్టర్‌ వీణాకుమారి తెలిపారు. 

ప్రభుత్వం ఏం చేస్తోంది?
రాష్ట్రంలో ప్రైవేటు ఆసుపత్రుల ఏర్పాటుపై ఎలాంటి నియంత్రణా లేదు. ఏ అర్హతలూ లేనివారు సైతం ఆసుపత్రిని ప్రారంభించి, ఓ డాక్టర్‌ను పెట్టుకుని పని నడిపించగల పరిస్థితి ఉంది. కొందరైతే దుకాణాలు పెట్టేందుకు లైసెన్సులు తీసుకుని ఆసుపత్రులు తెరుస్తున్నారు. దానితో వాటిపై నామమాత్రపు నియంత్రణకు కూడా అవకాశం లేకుండా పోతోంది.మెదక్‌ జిల్లాలో జరుగుతున్న ఈ దారుణాలపై జిల్లా కలెక్టర్‌ను ‘న్యూస్‌టుడే’ ప్రశ్నించగా ”దీనిపై మాకు ఎలాంటి ఫిర్యాదూ రాలేదు. మహిళలు స్వచ్ఛందంగా ఆపరేషన్లు చేయించుకున్నారు కాబట్టి మేం ఏమీ చేయలేం. అయితే ఆ ఆసుపత్రులపై నిఘా పెడతాం. మహిళల్లో అవగాహన పెంచేందుకు ప్రయత్నిస్తాం” అని చెప్పారు.

ఈ ఉదంతంపై అధ్యయనం చేస్తున్న ఇండియన్‌ రెడ్‌క్రాస్‌ సొసైటీ మాజీ ప్రధాన కార్యదర్శి, ఎంఎల్‌సీ డాక్టర్‌ రాజ్యలక్ష్మి ‘న్యూస్‌టుడే’తో మాట్లాడుతూ… ఆరోగ్య పరిరక్షణ విషయంలో మహిళలను చైతన్యవంతుల్ని చేయాల్సిన అవసరం ఉందని తెలిపారు. ఈ మేరకు తాము ప్రణాళికలను రూపొందిస్తున్నామన్నారు. గైనకాలజిస్ట్‌ సూచనలు, సలహాలు లేకుండా ఇటువంటి ఈ శస్త్రచికిత్సలు జరగడం అత్యంత ప్రమాదకరమని ఆమె ఆందోళన వ్యక్తంచేశారు.

Hyderabad: The cases of hysterectomy performed on women in villages of Medak by general surgeons and local doctors is not limited to this district alone. Hyderabad-based doctors say that hysterectomies (removal of uterus) are rampant across the state and women are conned into paying huge sums for this surgery where they lose a vital organ.

City-based gynaecologists point out that while such cases routinely surfaced from the Andhra belt in the past, cases are being reported from other districts as well. However, government officials and ministers are unaware of such cases, even though hundreds of such procedures are being performed at hardly any distance from the city. The hysterectomy procedures in Narsapur and Kowdipally mandals of Medak, for instance, are undertaken in clinics on the main road of Hyderabad-Medak highway. But, neither district officials nor local leaders are aware of any such practice here.

Gynaecologists said apart from Medak, cases have surfaced from other districts such as Mahbubnagar and Nalgonda. They point out that registered medical practitioners (RMPs) and general surgeons operate upon illiterate women. These procedures should be ideally undertaken by qualified gynaecologists.

“I have seen a case of a 20-year-old girl who had undergone a hysterectomy,” says Dr Shanta Kumari, vice-president of Obstetrician and Gynaecological Society of Hyderabad and associate professor in Deccan Medical College, Owaisi Hospital. She says, “Only a gynaecologist knows who needs a hysterectomy. Hysterectomy should be done in women who have indicate medical reasons such as cancer, very big fibroids where they have bleeding problems or ovarian tumors.” “It is high time that we did something about it. We have been observing this for some time now- girls in their 20s hysterectomised. The RMP practice is ruling the roost in these areas. We need to educate at the grassroot level,” says Dr Jayanti Reddy, director, JJ Hospital and secretary, Indian Menopause Society, who has seen such cases in Mahbubnagar.
Based on reports in this newspaper, industries minister Dr J Geeta Reddy has asked Medak collector to probe the matter and submit a detailed report. “We have to get to the bottom of this matter. This is a sensitive issue involving people’s lives,” said Geeta Reddy, whose constituency is Gajwal, a neighbouring mandal of Narsapur and Kowdipally mandals.

MP, MLA clueless about surgeries
Hyderabad: Medak district collector B Venkatesham said no cases of hysterectomy has been brought to his notice either by the public or by social groups.
He was reacting to the reports carried in this newspaper about hysterectomies being performed on young women in Narsapur and Kowdipally in Medak district.

Local leaders from the area too are unaware of this practice. Sarwe Satyanarayrana, member of Parliament from Siddipet constituency (Narsapur and Kowdipally fall under this constituency) said he would try to collect information on the matter and seek action against those found guilty. Narsapur MLA Sunita Lakshma Reddy too said she is clueless.

But, Dr K Rajyalakshmi, nominated member of the legislative council in Medak said she would be taking medical teams to these villages and undertake check-ups. Centre for Action Research and People’s Development (CARPED), a social group that works in these mandals, has submitted medical reports of women who have undergone the surgeries and based on them an in-depth study would be carried out soon, she said.

Meanwhile, Dr Narsing Rao from Narsapur mandal of Medak clarified that no women under 20 had undergone hysterectomy in his nursing home. “The age of women is 25, 28 or 30 or over 40,” he said.
